Boys' Bathroom for Mihama Secondary
Picture

About this Project

This is our THIRD bathroom building construction and our first of two bathroom buildings planned at Mihama Secondary School. 529 students currently share just 3 toilets for boys and 6 toilets for girls there, so the addition of 7 toilets and trough urinal for boys and 7 toilets and a changing room for girls will drastically improve the hygiene, health, and morale of the students.

Without adequate facilities, it's hard for students to keep themselves clean and healthy, to arrive to all classes on time, and to focus on their studies instead of worrying about issues with health and comfort. The addition of new, affordable facilities will help!
Why School Bathrooms are Crucial for Effective Learning [click here]
Everyone uses the bathroom every day. But what if:
  • There are no sinks or soap available?
  • There's no toilet paper or bidet or washing water available?
  • There are hundreds of students trying to share just a couple of toilets during a short break between classes?
  • Massive overuse makes the few toilets available perpetually filthy, even when cleaned very frequently?
Students need to BE safe and FEEL safe at school if they're going to learn. Access to sanitary toilets and sinks is a foundational requirement to meet these needs. Students who do not have access to these facilities are more likely to miss class while waiting in lines for toilets, more likely to develop health issues from "holding it in" when there are no toilets available, and more likely to contract and spread bacterial and viral infections such as UTI from unclean toilets, lack of hygienic products, and lack of sinks for hand washing. As noted by WaterAid, GlobalCitizen.org, and The Guardian, lack of safe facilities puts girls and women in particular at risk for truancy, absenteeism, harassment, and abuse.

How You Can Help

This project belongs to the Kesho Fund's School Infrastructure Program. You can support the Kesho Fund's School Infrastructure Program by using this PayPal-protected "Donate" button:
How will my money be used? [click here]
All donations will support our School Supplies Program directly, minus the international transfer fees we incur in sending this money to Tanzania. We do not presently need to use any of our project donations for other overhead costs (e.g. web hosting), though this may change in the future.
How much should I donate? [click here]
Our suggested donation for the School Supplies Program is $10-30 per month. Donating monthly helps us to make accurate plans for the future and maximize our impact.

Every $5 in the Books for Mwanza Schools budget can purchase a text book for a class. In classes where 50-100 students share just a couple of books, purchasing even one more for them can greatly improve students' opportunities for learning.
Are there any other ways I can help? [click here]
