Projects Overview

To give our supporters more control over where their money goes, and to facilitate ongoing monthly support when one project ends and another begins, the Kesho Fund groups its projects into Programs. The programs we are running now are:
  1. The Gender Equity Program
  2. The Schools Infrastructure Program
  3. The School Supplies Program
  4. The Core Support Program
All donations to a program will be used to support that program directly, up to the budgets listed below--any donations past the budget will spill over into our general use fund and be applied to the projects that we think need a boost.

Total amount donated to all projects so far: $50,916 (Updated Feb 1, 2021).

Gender Equity Program

Picture
In Tanzania, as everywhere else, serious issues of gender equity permeate daily life. Girls receive less encouragement and face more obstacles than boys in pursuing their studies, their careers, and their personal goals. Nevertheless, the hard work of girls, boys, and role models in our community are changing this day by day. Money donated to our Gender Equity Program supports the projects below.
1) Girls Empowerment Clubs Project [click here]
Project Leader: Oliver Kimathi
Intended Project Budget: $50 per month
Clubs Currently Supported: 3

Project Description: Oliver and her colleagues have been running girls' empowerment clubs atsecondary schools in Mwanza since 2016. These clubs provide much-needed support, counseling, social and medical information, and advice to female students. In 2017, Oliver's club led to one student being accepted to the United Nations GirlUp STEAM Camp in Malawi for 3 weeks to study science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). When the student returned to school, she immediately wrote a grant request back to GirlUp for $500 to supply her school with new science books, which was then approved and fulfilled. That same student was later accepted into the Pan-African Youth Leadership Program (PAYLP) in recognition of her achievements.

2) Manufacture of Sanitary Pads for Students Project [click here]
Project Leader: Oliver Kimathi
Intended Project Budget: $300 per month
Students Supported to Date: 883 (each supplied for 1-2 years)

Project Description: Throughout Tanzania, it is common for girls to miss school throughout the duration of their period due to lack of access to sanitary pads. This is partly due to the fact that 70% of the population lives on less than $2 per day (World Bank, 2015), but also partly due to social taboo preventing the topic from being engaged with openly and freely. See a report from Unicef here for more details.

School Infrastructure Program

Picture
Students who attend schools that lack basic infrastructure face a significant disadvantage in achieving their goals. In Tanzania, it is common for classrooms to hold over 100 students, some of whom have to sit on the floor and nearly all of whom have to share books with one another.  Bathrooms are not usually equipped with soap, and in many cases, students have to read in the dark in rooms that do not have electricity. Money donated to this program is used for addressing needs such as these by supporting school infrastructure projects in Tanzania.
1) Boys Bathroom Construction at Mihama Secondary School [click here]
At Mihama Secondary School, 579 boys currently share 3 toilets and no sinks. This creates an impossible situation during the short breaks between classes, resulting in truancy, absenteeism, and student illness. The Kesho Fund is building a new facility as a stopgap, which will offer 7 bathroom stalls, a trough urinal, 2 sinks, and a materials storage room.

This program is currently accruing $30 per month from monthly subscriptions (updated Feb 1, 2021).

School Supplies Program

Picture
When a school lacks basic supplies, neither the teachers nor the students can easily succeed at their goals there. This program addresses the need for more and better school supplies in Tanzania.
1) Textbooks for Mwanza Schools Project [click here]
Project Leader: Petro Okoth
Intended Budget: Disbursed to a school every time the project accrues $500
Books Bought to Date: 1006
Schools Supported to Date: 8

Description: Throughout Tanzania, it is common for classes of 100 students or more to share a small number of books between all students. Furthermore, the books being used are often outdated and in poor condition. This project selects public secondary schools in Mwanza based on demonstrated need for new books, works with the school administration and staff to decide which books are needed most, and supplies a new school with books each time the project fund reaches $500. In the future, this project will work with public primary schools in Mwanza as well.

2) School Breakfasts Project [click here]
Intended Budget: $70 per month
Meals Served So Far: 6,950
Current Cost of each Breakfast (porridge and fresh fruit): $0.23

This project offers free breakfasts for at-risk children in Mwanza. We are currently serving cornmeal porridge twice per week to 50 students in Luchelele Secondary School, and we include a choice of peanuts or a banana on one of those days each week. We hope to expand the project to include more nutritious meals, more days per week, more students at Luchelele, and finally at more schools.

Children throughout Mwanza have to travel (often by foot) for over an hour in each direction to attend school, and many of these kids are eating only one meal per day, which is dinner. This means that they arrive at school already hungry and tired and are at a serious disadvantage in the classroom.

 Kesho Fund Core Support Program

Picture
This is our general/discretionary use fund. [click here]
Like each of the smaller projects we stand behind, the Kesho Fund itself is a labor of love that could not exist without your support.

Donations sent to our Core Support Program help us to make sure that we have :
  1. Operating funds available to cover our costs of web hosting and money transfers, and
  2. Discretionary funds that we use to push projects over the finish line when they need a little boost or encounter an unanticipated issue.
We look forward to the time when we have grown sufficiently to also use this fund to pay staff in Tanzania and for basic marketing purposes, but we haven't reached that point yet. As a 501(c)(3) organization, our end-of-year financial documents are publicly available at Guidestar.
This program is currently accruing $174 per month from monthly subscriptions (updated Feb 1, 2021).
