Textbooks for Mwanza Schools Project
About this Project
|
This project prioritizes sends textbooks to the least well-resourced secondary schools in Mwanza. Some have no electricity, some have multiple students sharing each chair or desk, and some have up to 100 students crammed into rooms intended for less than half that number. Few or none have learning materials a teacher could call adequate for their students' needs.
This fund fills up continuously, and each time it reaches $500, we spend it on books for another school in Mwanza.

Detailed Project Description [click here]
In the first school we examined in our needs analysis for this project, we found that the school had only 3 copies of the required text book for its first year English class being shared between 270 students total (taught in groups of about 70 students at a time). This is a true ratio of 90 students per book, or an effective ratio of about 23 students per book for each group of 70. It is not possible for 23 students to share a single textbook effectively in a crowded, loud, and dim classroom environment. In its biology and chemistry classes, that school did not have a single reference book of their own for teachers to base lessons on.
We are working systematically through the list of 48 public secondary schools in Mwanza and determining those of greatest need—for the next several on our list at any given time, we are discussing the preferences among books with the heads of schools and teaching staff to determine how to best use our support.
Each time this fund reaches $500, the project leader buys the agreed-upon books for the next school on our list and delivers them personally. So far, we have purchased books for:

How You Can Help
This project belongs to the Kesho Fund's School Supplies Program. You can support the Kesho Fund's School Supplies Program by using this PayPal-protected "Donate" button:
How will my money be used? [click here]
All donations will support our School Supplies Program directly, minus the international transfer fees we incur in sending this money to Tanzania. We do not presently need to use any of our project donations for other overhead costs (e.g. web hosting), though this may change in the future. How much should I donate? [click here]
Our suggested donation for the School Supplies Program is $10-30 per month. Donating monthly helps us to make accurate plans for the future and maximize our impact. Every $5 in the Books for Mwanza Schools budget can purchase a textbook for a class. In classes where 50-100 students share just a couple of books, purchasing even one more for them can greatly improve students' opportunities for learning. Are there any other ways I can help?
